New Single: Ice Cream Parlours

https://vincentburke.bandcamp.com/track/ice-cream-parlours-2?from=fanpub_fnb_trk

That’s the Link up there if you want to hear it – course you do!

This song is about the shy 14 year old me cycling down a hill in Plymouth one Sunday morning and meeting this girl, who said we should go out; and then what happened after that…

I think it has some lovely playing on it – particularly that middle bit.

and Here are words in case you want to sing along.

Ice Cream Parlours

it was a break in the cloud,
it was the first day of Summer
I was just standing around
what did I do?
I did nothing
and suddenly you were there
and you were looking like Summer
you had the sun in your hair
and we were stood on the corner
you had your hand on your hip
and all the sky was an ocean
and all the awkwardness gone
and I was falling like ice cream parlours
blue and golden

and when I got to your house
I said hello to your sister
because your parents were out
so we went up to your bedroom
like it was always allowed
and we were sat on your bed
and all the bed was like flowers
and I was talking to you
and we were kissing for hours
and all the rubbish was gone
and we were covered in sunlight
and we were falling like ice cream parlours
blue and golden

lightening strike me down if I’m not good enough
lightening strike me down if I’m not good enough
God can strike me down if I’m not good enough

now when I’m passing your house
it’s kind of odd to remember
like how we even went out
beneath a golfing umbrella
‘cos when I went back to school
well I forgot to remember
so when I saw you with him
I had to treat it like nothing
how we were sat on your bed
how we were covered in sunlight
how all the rubbish was gone
and we were falling like ice cream parlours
blue and golden

lightening strike me down if I’m not good enough
lightening strike me down if I’m not good enough
God can strike me down if I’m not good enough…

Once Again Video

We filmed this video for ‘Once again’ early last October. The first trick was to convincing Carol and Laurie they wanted to come on a bit of a Sunday afternoon road trip.

I’d looked on Google Maps for a place close enough that might work for a bit of seclusion and found a pull-in by some scrub off Mitcham Common.  Laurie filmed from the back seat and Carol was pursuaded to do a bit of the acting in the front seat.

We had been messing around on the Common for a long time filming but really we were waiting for dusk. I wanted to get a sense of journeying into excitement and jeopardy and that needed a bit of darkness.

I had my pad of paper with shots to tick off which I was hoping would give me much more footage than I needed. Then later when I got home I moved things around to see what fitted with each line of music.

Each time I do this I’m trying to make it visually interesting without ecclipsing the song.  The challenge for a narrative song  like this one is to suggest things without over explaining it. So there were a lot of shots I left out, shoes getting pulled off and thrown on to the back seat, that sort of thing, because they were too on the nose.  Instead of that stuff, I edited together lots of clips with ‘red for danger’ like the tail-lights; and that parked red car like a dangerous red heart.  Other bits came by with a bit of luck; I really like that fox scuttling away at 0.55 – moody 😉

Anyhow as you won’t be able to tell from the video we had a laugh running around on the Common and squashed into the car. Hope you like the song! Thanks Laurie, Thanks Carol 🙂
